Meet Harsh Narang for free photo copies : Founder of Phokatcopy

Students who spend a lot on photocopying notes on campus can earn it all back by way of points that can be traded for fast food, free mobile talk time or iPods. This is the idea of an young entrepreneur who is doing his MTech from IIT-Delhi.

Harsh Narang, a final year student of Masters in Mathematics and Computing at IIT Delhi, is out to take the student community by surprise with his venture – PhokatCopyTM – which has started full scale operations from 16th July 2010. Let’s hear about his journey of making the idea into a full fledged business venture!

Harsh Narang founder of PhokatCopy

22-year-old Harsh Narang, an IIT-Delhi final year student (MTech), has joined hands with three students from the institute, two from Delhi University and one from BITS-Pilani, to set up 'Phokatcopy' that subsidises photocopying for students across various colleges in the capital.

PhokatCopy links student needs with an innovative marketing strategy, providing an opportunity for highly streamlined advertising, with targeted brand visibility to impact this demographic.

It offers students photocopying services at no cost, subsidized by revenues gained through advertising initiatives on the back page.

Business Strategy:

Phokat which means "Free" in Hindi

Phokatcopy has tied up with photocopiers of 25 colleges in Delhi whereby a photocopy costs 75 paise per copy, Phokatcopy offers them for just 50 paise. If it is for 50 paise, Phokatcopy offers them for 40 paise. For every 20 sheets of photocopies, students get a scratch card which has to be registered through Phokatcopy website. The scratch cards give them points equal to the money spent by students for photocopies.

How it works:

PhokatCopyTM is a pro student initiative which has the premise of ‘Free Photocopy’, offering students photocopying services at no cost, subsidized by revenues gained through advertising initiatives on the back page.

Phokatcopy has tied up with numerous companies like Fast Track, Cafe Coffee Day and Nirula's, among others, through which they dole out freebies and also act as a platform for advertisers to target specific audience.

Let's say, student accumulate 65 points which is equal to Rs 65, he can avail a free hot chocolate fudge coupon which would be mailed to the address that he has registered with phokatcopy.com, adding that one can also take part in the weekly sweepstakes that give a chance to win iPods.

As a part of this project, phokatcopy will also be installing Green Bins on all campuses. Once their supply chain is in place, collecting paper won’t be a hassle and then they will be sending that paper for recycling.

Getting idea of Phokatcopy:

"I have never maintained a notebook since class 8th. Naturally, I have relied on photocopies all my life! Once in IIT, needs increased further and at times I used to get upto 500 pages photo copied per semester! Then one day somewhere in January 2008, I saw a poster on campus advertising for Vishisht, a Business Plan Competition in IIT D itself. This competition gave me the impetus to come up with this idea and formulate it into a Business Plan." said Harsh Narang.

Pilot survey in IIT D for business plan:

Students carrying photo copies having Phokatcopy logo

Before implmenting this project Harsh had conducted a Pilot Survey in IIT D campus .The survey was basically in the form of a questionnaire. He also conducted a kind of online survey to get his friends and others opinions.

He got positive response from everyone - and people showed very enthusiastic about the idea. As the name itself is so catchy- the idea of free photocopying is also became popular in the campus.

Harsh adds "Even today when I contact some companies, even the receptionist sounds genuinely interested-‘PhokatCopyTM you said?’ is the normal response I get- Its all in the name I guess!"

Present status of PhokatCopyTM?

Photocopy center at a college following business strategy of Phokatcopy

Today, PhokatCopyTM is a private limited company-all the paper work is done. Over the last two months (and earlier too) PhokatCopy have collaborated with colleges and advertisers. They have tied up with approximately 25 colleges, mostly from Delhi University and are in touch with advertisers from various segments of industry ranging from education to telecommunication and even food and beverages.

Even though advertisers are facing tough problems with Recession, they are confident of the idea and showing positive response .

Every new idea faces roadblocks

Harsh also faced set of problems. "A pertinent question every advertiser would ask me was guarantee of visibility." he added. However they developed a way to ensure that. As part compensation, we would be giving company vouchers to students on availing the photocopy service from our outlets. These would be redeemed by a specific process which would ensure visibility to the advertisers.

"Also, one of the major problems I faced was to build a committed and dedicated team. Getting people to believe in your idea and get them involved in a start up is surely a tough task-you will always encounter skepticism. It can never be a ‘One Man Show’ and therefore one always needs a strong team by his side", he added.

Vision for the company

4.7 million students-photocopy 450 pages a year on an average when they have to pay for it-it’s a big market. This works for Phokatcopy as well as for the advertisers.

If things go on well, Harsh Narang is planning to introduce a social angle to their venture too. "We plan to start an NGO which will build a book bank, collecting old textbooks from private schools and make that accessible to kids from government schools and at a later stage even have our own PhokatCopyTM stationary etc distributed or perhaps sold at a highly subsidised rate in these schools" he added.

Mobile Phone in 1928 !!!!

Stunned...!!!!! ??? yes, Mobile was used in late 1920s...

Mobile phone was used in late 1920s, but was in a movie. It was "father of the funny world" CHARLIE CHAPLIN's movie "The Circus". It was produced in the year 1928.

The movie shows an older woman dressed in a coat and a hat with her hand held up to the left-hand side of her face as she starts talking, her gestures and behavior when she "talks" were familiar to modern day mobile phone users..

Some viewers have suggested that she is listening to a portable radio closer to her face, although this would not explain why she appears to be talking. Some guess she is covering her face to hide the fact that she is talking aloud to herself (some kinda abnormality).
Some even think that she is simply trying to hide her face from the
camera so that, she is not filmed.

No body knows the exact truth, but the idea was wonderful. This apart, first mobile phone prototype was developed by Motorola nearly 10years after this flick.

Rata Tata in Fortune’s ‘Business Person of Year’ list
Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata is among eight business leaders from across the world shortlisted by the prestigious Fortune magazine for its 'Business Person of the Year', an honour that will go to the leader who made the "biggest mark" in business in 2010.

Fortune magazine will name its 'Business Person of the Year' on November 18.

The other business honchos in the fray are billionaire Warren Buffett, Apple Chief Steve Jobs, Ford Motor CEO Alan Mulally, Google CEO Eric Schmidt, DuPont CEO Ellen Kullman, McDonald's CEO James Skinner and Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.

On Tata, Fortune said his group's Tata Motors unit restarted orders for the "ultra cheap, high-demand Nano car" and "at the high end, has reinvigorated Jaguar."

For the title, the publication started with 32 business leaders who had been "seeded and matched-up by the editors of Fortune."

In the process of finalising the winner, Fortune will talk to analysts, consultants, executives and former executives, "those moving markets and those playing them." Fortune has also asked its readers to submit votes online on "which leader you think made a bigger impact in 2010."

The 32 have been narrowed down to eight after two weeks of voting.

In the first week of elimination, Tata won 60 percent of votes and beat micro-blogging site Twitter co-founder Evan Williams to reach the second round, where he beat Jamie Dimon, CEO of global financial services firm J P Morgan Chase by a similar number of votes.

Mobile number portability again postponed to December 20th

Communications Minister A Raja’s promise to let people switch their mobile service operators while retaining their telephone number has got delayed once again — the deadline for the implementation of mobile number portability has been postponed from October 31 to December 20.

This is the third postponement in less than a year. Mobile number portability was first expected to kick off on December 31, 2009 in the metros and category-A circles, and on April 1, 2010 in the rest of the country.

The official reasons for the delay sound familiar. One, the service operators are not ready, though several of them are working overtime to launch third-generation services by Diwali. Two, the investment proposal of the overseas partner of one of the two companies mandated to implement portability has not yet been cleared by the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB).

The Department of Telecommunications had given licences to two companies: Syniverse Technologies and MNP Interconnection Telecom Solutions which is a 74-26 joint venture between US-based Telcordia and Deepak Talwar Consultants. In March 2009, Telcordia had received FIPB's approval. But the Ministry of Home Affairs subsequently proposed to revoke the approval, citing security concerns as Telcordia had signed a contract with Pakistan MNP Database for implementing mobile number portability there. Further, Deepak Talwar Consultants had no expertise in running a telecommunication network. FIPB had thus revoked its clearance given to the company. But it again applied for permission; FIPB has deferred the proposal.

Meanwhile, the Department of Telecommunications has asked Syniverse Technologies to get ready for mobile number portability across the country.

US Govt books all 547 rooms at Taj Mahal Palace Hotel for Obama

The sources said sketchy details of the President's itinerary had been made available to local authorities at this stage. A team of US officials visited the city at the beginning of the month to lay the groundwork for the visit. An advance security liaison team is due to arrive here a week before Obama lands, the sources added.

Taj Mahal Palace Hotel at Mumbai which was recovered from 26/11 terror attack

"As expected, the US authorities are leaving absolutely nothing to chance. All 547 rooms as well banquet halls and restaurants at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel have been booked by them, so that they have exclusive use of the building," one senior official said.

"In addition to this around 80 to 90 rooms have been booked at the ITC Maratha near the airport to accommodate their airline staff. All three theatres at the NCPA (National Centre for Performing Arts) have also been booked in preparation for a possible business interaction. There will be around 45 cars in Obama's convoy including the specially reinforced Lincoln Continental in which he will travel," the officer added.

Elaborate security arrangements are also being put in place at The Oberoi-Trident Hotels, Mani Bhavan and the 26/11 Mumbai Police Memorial at Marine Drive, which Obama is expected to visit. There are also tentative plans for first lady Michelle Obama to visit Kamathipura along with representatives of a local NGO working in the area.

"A team of officials from White House is expected on Monday along with officials from New Delhi. That is when there will be more clearance on what will happen during the visit," said a senior government official.

Meet Suhas Gopinath : World's youngest CEO at the age of 14

When 14-year-old Suhas Gopinath started Globals Inc ten years ago from a cyber cafe in Bengaluru, he didn't know that he had become the youngest CEO in the world.

Today, Globals is a multi-million dollar company with offices in the United States, India, Canada, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Spain, Australia, Singapore and the Middle East and has 100 employees in India and 56 abroad.

Among the several honours that have been bestowed upon this young man, the most prestigious is the invitation to be a member of the Board of the ICT Advisory Council of the World Bank..

In 2007, the European Parliament and International Association for Human Values conferred 'Young Achiever Award' on him. He was also invited to address the European Parliament and other business dignitaries assembled in the EU Parliament. He is also recognized as one of the 'Young Global Leaders' for 2008-2009 by the prestigious World Economic Forum.

Suhas is the youngest member ever in the World Economic Forum's history. The other members include the Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal, Hollywood star Leonardo DiCaprio, musician A R Rahman, Prince of Brunei, etc.

On his childhood

I come from a middle class family. My father worked as a scientist for the Indian Army. I used to study in the Air Force school in Bengaluru.

As a child, I was more interested in animals and veterinary science. But when I saw my friends who had home computers talk about it, I had this urge to learn and talk in their wave length.

But we didn't have a computer at home. In those days, computers were very expensive and we couldn't afford one.

So, what I did was, I located an Internet cafe near my house. With my modest monthly pocket money of Rs 15, I couldn't afford to surf the net every day.

I noticed that the shop was closed in the afternoon from 1 PM to 4 PM. So, I offered to open the shop for him after my school hours and take care of the customers.

In the bargain, he let me browse the net for free. That was the first business deal of my life and it turned out to be a successful one.

On building websites using open source technology

Once I got the chance to manage the shop and browse the net, I started building websites. It became my passion in no time.

I got hooked to open source technology after I started looking for e-books on how to build websites. They were not available as they were created in propriety sources.

So, I started using open source to build websites.

On getting the first contract to build a website

There is a freelance marketplace on the web where I could register and offer my services to build websites. I registered myself there as a website builder.

The first website I had to do was free of cost as I had no references. It was for a company in New York.

My first income was $100 when I was 13 for building another website but I didn't have a bank account. so, I told my father that I built a website and got paid for it.

I was not excited to get the money because money was not a factor that drew me to it. It was the passion for technology that attracted me. I used to build websites free of cost also. I was only a 9th standard student.

After that, I built my own portal and called it Coolhindustan.com. It was focused on NRIs. It was a portal where I wanted to showcase my skills.

After that, many companies approached me to be their web designer.

On buying his first computer

When I was in the 9th standard itself, I had made enough money to buy a computer for myself. At that time, my brother was studying engineering and my father thought he needed a computer.

In no time, I also bought one for myself. But we didn't have a net connection at home.

My spending hours in the net cafe working on websites did affect my studies. I spent the entire summer vacation after the 9th standard in the cafe.

On rejecting a job offer from the US

Suhas with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gate
Suhas with Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates
When I was 14, Network Solutions offered me a part-time job in the US and they said they would sponsor my education in the US. I rejected the offer because that was the time I had read a story about Bill Gates and how he started Microsoft.

I thought it was more fun to have your own company. Many US companies used to tell me that I didn't even have a moustache and they felt insecure taking my services. They used to connect my ability with my age and academic qualifications.

So, I wanted to start my own company and show the world that age and academic qualifications are immaterial. I decided then that when I started a company, I would recruit only youngsters and I would not ask for their academic qualifications and marks cards. I follow that in my company.

On starting his own company at 14

Gopinath delivering a lecture at the DLD Conference
Soon after my 9th standard summer vacation, I started my own company, Globals Inc. I wanted the name Global or Global Solutions but both were not available, so I named it Globals.
I registered my company in the US as in India, you will not be able to start a company unless you are 18. It takes only 15 minutes to start a company in the US.

I became the owner and CEO of the company. My friend, an American who was a university student, became a board member.

I was very excited because that was what I wanted to do. From that day, I started dreaming of making my company as big as Microsoft.

On doing badly in school

In my pre-board CBSE exam, I failed in Mathematics. The school headmistress was shocked because that was the first time I had failed in any subject. She called my mother and said she was horrified by my performance.

At home, like any typical South Indian mother, my mother made me swear on her head that I would focus on academics.

I told my mother that the world's richest man Bill Gates had not completed his education. Why do you force me then, I asked her. She then said, I am sure his horoscope and yours are not the same!

I come from a family where entrepreneurship is considered a sin. My mother was quite upset. She wanted me to do engineering, then an MBA and work in a good company.

As per my mother's wishes, I took a four-month sabbatical from my company and studied for my board exam. I passed with a first class.

I still feel that you cannot restrict yourself to bookish knowledge. I believe that practical knowledge is more important.

In the first year, the turnover of Globals Inc was Rs 1 lakh (Rs 100,000). The second year, the turnover went up to Rs 5 lakh (Rs 500,000).

On looking at Europe as a market
Suhas recieving the Incredible Europe Innovation Award at Vienna
Till I was 16 or 17, I didn't tell my parents that I had started a company. I kept it a secret because I thought they would object to it. They only knew that I was a freelancer.
We used to build websites and also offer online shopping and e commerce solutions. We even gave part time work to a few programmers in the US when we got many projects but we never had any office.

When I was 16, I saw that there were enormous business opportunities in Europe as a majority of the Indian IT companies were working for American companies.

When I contacted a Spanish company, it rejected my offer saying Indians do not know Spanish. As an entrepreneur, you can't accept rejection, especially when you are young.

I hired five student interns from some Spanish universities and told them they would be paid based on their successful sales.

They were the people who met the companies and bagged the projects for us. By now, we decided to have a home office in Spain.

I replicated the same model in Italy. I contacted some Italian university students.

On going to Germany to talk about entrepreneurship
Suhas meeting with Sheikha Nayhan, Minister for Higher Education, the UAE.
Suhas meeting with Sheikha Nayhan, Minister for Higher Education, the UAE
The American newspapers were writing a lot about me as the world's youngest CEO at 14 from India, from a middle class background.

It was a good story for the BBC also. I never expected to be in the limelight. For me, starting a company was like realising a passion of mine.

On seeing these stories, a B-school in Germany invited me to talk to its students on entrepreneurship. I was 17 then. By now, I had completed my 12th standard and had joined Engineering in Bengaluru.

When I was 18, we set up an office -- the European HQ in Bonn. Then, we moved to Switzerland. Six months back, we started our operations in Vienna as well.

That is how we spread our operations from a small Internet cafe to become a multinational company with significant operations in Europe, Middle East, the US, Canada, the UK, Australia, etc.

On registering a company in India at 18

The day I turned 18, I registered our company in India as Globals, opened an office and recruited four people. I opened the office next to the Internet cafe where I started my career.

By then, he had closed shop and joined a factory as an employee. Whenever I met him, I used to tell him, 'you made me an entrepreneur but you stopped being one.'

On moving to creating products

We wanted our company also to be a product development company and our focus was on education, like the software that manages everything about a child while in school starting from admission till he/she leaves school and becomes an alumnus.

It is a nasty software which students are going to be quite unhappy about! This software was aimed only at the Indian market. I want to be the market leader in ICT in education.

Our software is being used in more than 100 schools all over India, Singapore and the Middle East.

We are now in the process of raising funds. Once we do it, we will separate the company into two -- service and product development. I want to concentrate on products as I can't sail on two boats.

On meeting former President Abdul Kalam

Suhas Gopinath with former President APJ Abdul Kalam

I met Dr Abdul Kalam when he was the President of India. I was 17 or 18 then. My meeting was scheduled for 15 minutes but we had such an intense conversation that it went on for one-and-a-half hours.

I didn't feel that I was talking to the President of India. We talked like two friends. He was sitting in his chair across the table but after some time, he came and sat next to me. He isi such a modest person that it was a learning experience for me.

On being on the board of the World Bank
World Bank president Robert Zoellick

As per the wishes of my parents, I joined engineering but didn't complete my engineering: like Bill Gates! When I was in my 5th semester, the World Bank invited me to attend their board meeting. I am the only Indian on the board of the World Bank.

The objective was to explore how ICT can improve the quality of education in the emerging economies, by bringing in accountability and transparency in their financial deeds.

Robert B. Zoellick, the president of the World Bank, decided that they could not have only Americans on the board and needed people from across the world. As they were focussing on education, they wanted young minds to add value to the work.

He preferred a young mind from an emerging country and that was how I got the invitation in 2005. Not even in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would be on the board of the World Bank. The invitation was the most unforgettable moment in my life. I report directly to Robert B Zoellick!

Some of the others on the board are the CEO of Cisco, the vice president of Microsoft and the CEO of SAP; all Fortune 500 companies and me, the only Indian!

I am helping the World Bank set policies on ICT in university education so that employability can be enhanced. My aim is to reduce the number of unemployed eligible youth in the world.

Right now, we are concentrating on Africa. Soon, I want to shift the focus on to India. It has been an amazing experience for me.

But I had to discontinue my engineering education at the time I joined the board, as I didn't have enough attendance in college!

On his dreams for his company

I have always believed that IT is not just technology but a tool that can solve the problems of people.

That is what I want to do in my company.

I want my company to be a market leader in software solutions concentrating on education.

When I was younger, I didn't care about money. Now that I am responsible for my employees, I care about what we make. If I am not bothered about money, we cannot scale up our business.

When I started my company from a net cafe in Bengaluru, I never ever imagined that one day my company would be a multi-million dollar company and I would be on the World Bank board as a member.

What drives me is my passion and it has been an amazing journey so far.

Suresh Raina caught in CCTV cameras : Company with a woman at hotel

The ICC Anti-Corruption and Security Unit is probing why the Indian Board kept quiet about a report of its player Suresh Raina being seen in the company of a woman linked to an associate of an illegal bookmaker, a media report said.

Suresh Raina(23) : Cricketer
Making it clear that Raina was not suspected of any wrongdoing, The Sunday Times, quoting a senior ICC source, said the incident related to India's tour of Sri Lanka earlier this year.

With the heightened security concerns following the 2009 terrorist attack on the Sri Lankan team in Pakistan, the Sri Lankans deputed a former general to look after the Indian team.

CCTV Cameras installed at the Indian team hotel showed that on more than one night Raina was in the company of a woman known to be an associate of a man allegedly linked to a bookmaker.

A report, including the CCTV footage, was submitted by the Sri Lankan Cricket Board to their Indian counterparts.

According to the newspaper report, it is the reaction of the BCCI secretary N Srinivasan that has led to the ICC investigation. Instead of acting on the report, Srinivasan is alleged to have got the Sri Lankans withdraw it.

Most entertaining Interview. Must read it !!

Most entertaining Interview. Must read it !!
Amazing interview, probably can help you in your future interviews. Last answer is quite hilarious..............

Interviewer : Tell me about yourself.

Candidate: I am Rameshwar Kulkarni. I did my Tele Communication engineering from BabanRao Dhole-Patil Institute of Technology.

Interviewer : BabanRao Dhole-Patil Institute of Technology? I had never heard of this college before!

Candidate : Great! Even I had not heard of it before getting an admission into it ..

What happened is - due to cricket world cup I scored badly! in 12th.I was getting a paid seat in a good college.

But my father said (I prefer to call him 'baap') - "I can not invest so much of money".(The baap actually said - "I will never waste so much of money on you"). So I had to join this college.

Frankly speaking this name - BabanRao Dhole-Patil, can at the most be related to a Shetakari Mahavidyalaya.

Interviewer: ok, ok. It seems you have taken 6 years to complete your engineering.

Candidate : Actually I tried my best to finish it in 4 years. But you know, these cricket matches and football
world cup, and tennis tournaments. It is difficult to concentrate.

So I flunked in 2nd and 3rd year. So in all I took

4 + 2 = 7 years.

Interviewer: But 4+2 is 6.

Candidate: Oh, is it? You know I always had KT in maths. But I will try to keep this in mind.
4+2 is 6, good, thanks. These cricket matches really affect exams a lot..
I think they should ban it.

Interviewer : Good to know that you want cricket matches to be banned.

Candidate : No, no... I am talking about Exams!!

Interviewer: Ok, What is your biggest achievement in life?

Candidate : Obviously, completing my Engineering. My mom never thought I would complete it. In fact, when I flunked in 3rd year, she was looking for a job for me in BEST (Bus corporation in Maharashtra ) through some relative.

Interviewer : Do you have any plans of higher study?

Candidate: he he he.. Are you kidding? Completing 'lower' education itself was so much of pain!!

Interviewer : Let's talk about technical stuff. On which platforms have you worked?

Candidate : Well, I work at SEEPZ, so you can say Andheri is my current platform. Earlier I was at Vashi center. So Vashi was my platform then. As you can see I have experience of different platforms! (Vashi and Andheri are the places in Mumbai)

Interviewer : And which languages have you used?

But considering the fact that there is Olympics coming up in China in the current year, I don't mind going there in that period. As you can see I am modest and don't have many expectations.

So can I assume my selection?

Interviewer: he he he ha ha ha. Thanks for your interest in our organization. In fact I was never entertained so much before. Welcome to OUR Company.

The fellow was appointed in a newly created section 'Stress Management' in the HRD of that company.

A Weapon Called - 'Self Confidence'

Generally, every one will go through a worst phase in their lives and as a result they lose confidence on themselves. To regain the lost confidence, here is a short story :
The business executive was deep in debt and could see no way out. Creditors were closing in on him. Suppliers were demanding payment. He sat on the park bench, head in hands, wondering if anything could save his company from bankruptcy.

Suddenly an old man appeared before him. "I can see that something is troubling you," he said. After listening to the executive's woes, the old man said, "I believe I can help you."

He asked the man his name, wrote out a check, and pushed it into his hand saying, "Take this money. Meet me here exactly one year from today, and you can pay me back at that time." The business executive saw in his hand a check for $500,000, signed by John D. Rockefeller, then one of the richest men in the world!

"I can erase my money worries in an instant!" he realized. But instead, the executive decided to put the un-cashed check in his safe. Just knowing it was there might give him the strength to work out a way to save his business, he thought.

With renewed optimism, he negotiated better deals and extended terms of payment. He closed several big sales. Within a few months, he was out of debt and making money once again.

One year later, he returned to the park with the un-cashed check. At the agreed-upon time, the old man appeared. But just as the executive was about to hand back the check and share his success story, a nurse came running up and grabbed the old man.

"I'm so glad I caught him!" she cried. "I hope he hasn't been bothering you. He's always escaping from the home and telling people he's John D. Rockefeller."And she led the old man away.

The astonished executive just stood there, stunned. All year long he'd been wheeling and dealing, buying and selling, convinced he had half a million dollars behind him.

Suddenly, he realized that it wasn't the money that had turned his life around. It was his new found self-confidence that gave him the power to achieve anything he went after.

Azim Premji to sell 4.52% stake in wipro to launch Rs 4500 Crore endowment trust

Azim Premji to sell 4.52% stake in wipro to launch Rs 4500 Crore endowment trust

Wipro’s founder, Azim Premji , will launch an endowment trust, modelled on the lines of the world-famous Harvard Management Company , to fund all his philanthropic activities. The trust, which will eventually have a billion-dollar corpus, will be operational in January next year.

The trust will largely focus on leading the education initiatives strongly favoured by Mr Premji, according to people close to the development.

(Mr) Premji would sell around 4.52% stake in Wipro to fund this corpus. This will also help Mr Premji bring down his holding in the company and comply with the new finance ministry rule that mandates companies listed in India must increase their public shareholding to 25%.

The trust will be led by KR Lakshminarayana , the current chief of Wipro’s strategy and mergers & acquisitions. He declined to comment on the developments.

Global Hunger Index - India at 67

In the recent release from International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) for Global Hunger Index (GHI) for the year 2010, India is seen at 67. The rating is amongst 84 countries on the basis of three leading indicators -prevalence of child malnutrition, rate of child mortality, and the proportion of people who are calorie deficient.

Our neighboring rivals China is placed at 9th and Pakistan at 52nd. Other neighbors SriLanka stands at 39th, Nepal 56th, Bangladesh 68th position.

Highlights pertaining to India in this recent release are :

  •  India's high index scores are driven by high levels of child underweight resulting from the low nutritional and social status of women in the country
  • India accounts for a large share of the world’s undernourished children
  • India is home to 42 % of the world’s underweight children, while Pakistan has just 5 %
In South and Southeast Asia, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Timor-Leste are among countries with hunger levels considerably higher than their gross national income (GNI) per capita.

This is one more worrying factor for the largest democratic nation in the world.

Humans will need two earths by 2030 to Survive

Humans are overusing the planet's resources and will need two Earths by 2030,a new report warns.

According to the Living Planet Report, human demands on natural resources have doubled in under 50 years and are now outstripping what the Earth can provide by more than half; and humanity carries on as it is in use of resources, globally it will need the capacity of two Earths by 2030.

The report said that wildlife in tropical countries is also under huge pressure, with populations of species falling by 60 per cent in three decades, the 'Daily Mail' reported.

And the report, from the WWF, the Zoological Society of London and the Global Footprint Network, said that British people are still consuming far more than the Earth can cope with.

If everyone lived such a lifestyle, humans would need 2.75 planets to survive, it warned.

The study's authors looked at 8,000 populations of 2,500 species and studied the change in land use and water consumption across the globe.

Britain comes 31st in a list of countries based on their 'ecological footprint' - the amount of land and sea each person needs to provide the food, clothes and other products they consume and to absorb the carbon dioxide they emit.

The country has fallen down the league table from having the 15th biggest footprint in the last report two years ago, but WWF attributes this to an increase in other countries' impact rather than a reduction in the UK's use of resources.

Tata Group gifts Rs 221 Crore to Harvard Business School

Tata Group gifts Rs 220 Crore to Harvard Business School

India's Tata Group has given a whopping USD 50 million(Rs 221.25 Crore) to the prestigious Harvard Business School here to fund a new academic and residential building on its campus, the largest gift received by the institute from an international donor in its 102-year-old history.

The gift comes from Tata Companies, the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and the Tata Education and Development Trust, the philanthropic entities of the Group.

It comes days after Anand Mahindra, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Mahindra and Mahindra Group, gave USD 10 million to the Humanities Centre at Harvard. A Harvard alumnus, Mahindra gave the gift, the "largest" in the Centre's history, in honour of his mother Indira Mahindra.

Ratan Tata, Chairman of Tata Sons, attended Harvard's Advanced Management Programme -- one of three comprehensive leadership programmes offered by the Harvard Business School's (HBS') Executive Education in 1975.

He had also received the School's highest honour, the Alumni Achievement Award, in 1995.

The School said it will use the USD 50 million gift from the Tata Group to fund a new academic and residential building on its campus for participants in its broad portfolio of Executive Education programmes.

HBS hopes to break ground for the building, which will be named Tata Hall, next spring. It is expected to be open for use by late 2013.

Calling it a privilege and a pleasure to "give back to Harvard a little bit of what it gave to me," Tata said he hoped the new facility would encourage and inspire future leaders to take advantage of the executive education offerings at HBS.

"The Harvard Business School is the preeminent place to be exposed to the world's best thinking on management and leadership and we are pleased that this gift will support the School's educational mission to mold the next generation of global business leaders," Tata said.

Expressing "deep appreciation" for Tata's "generosity," Harvard Business School's Indian-origin Dean Nitin Nohria said the "historic" gift comes from an organisation "revered" for its significant economic, civic and philanthropic impact.

"The Tata Group is widely respected for integrity and innovation, not just in India — where it produced both the first indigenous car and the 2,000 dollar Tata Nano automobile — but in a variety of business lines across several continents, from cars to hotels and from tea to information technology," Nohria said.

Mukesh ready to move into his luxury 27-storey home "Antilia" on October 28

Antilia, the luxe 27-storey home of India's richest person Mukesh Ambani in south Mumbai, is ready for housewarming during the ongoing festive season. The building, which stands taller than most buildings in the vicinity and is visible from a distance in every direction, bears the name of a legendary island in the Atlantic Ocean.

Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, India's largest private sector company, whose personal wealth is estimated to be $27 billion, is set to move into his mansion by the end of the month. The palatial building, completed after seven years of labour, has three helipads on the top floor and has been billed as the most opulent home of an individual anywhere in the world. The Ambani scion has invited the who's who of the country for a sneak preview and celebrations on October 28.

Ambani's multi-million-dollar customized skyscraper in Altamount Road would have Kumar Mangalam Birla, scion of the Birla family, as one of his neighbours.

The glass tower that stands 570 feet tall features a swimming pool, a health club, a salon and a mini-theater. The first six levels comprise the garage where more than 160 cars can be parked. Atop the parking lot is Antilia's lobby, which has nine elevators.

The lobby leads to numerous lounges, powder rooms and a ballroom. The top floors, with a sweeping view of the city, are where the 53-year old business magnate, his wife Nita and children Akash, Anant and Isha will reside. Nita, who has been managing the affairs at Dhirubhai Ambani International School and the Mumbai Indians IPL team, has been involved in every detail and aspect of the mansion, roping in international architecture firms Hirsch Bedner Associates and Perkins Will. No two rooms in the building look the same.

"I have seen several houses, including that of Lakshmi Mittal (owner of Arcelor Mittal). But Antilia is marvelous. I remember the house having a Picasso painting, it was one of its kind," said the chairman of a diversified telecom-to-retail business. The ballroom, according to him, was just stunning. He confirmed that he has an invitation to visit the new Ambani home on the 28th. For some others, it has become a talking point.

Currently, the elder Ambani brother shares the address with his estranged brother Anil Ambani, who manages Reliance Anil Dhirubhai Group of companies, at Sea Wind in South Mumbai's posh Cuffed Parade. Incidentally, the elder brother bought the plot on Altamount Road soon after the spat between the brothers became public. The two have patched up recently.

Traditional Lounge : Ambani's home features countless lounges, offering Reliance Industries guests a quiet escape. Chandeliers and mirrors are a common feature of these rooms, as are finely woven Indian area rugs.

Mukesh Ambani 27 storey building Antilia: Modern Lounge
Modern Lounge : Each space and floor uses materials not seen anywhere else. The idea is that spaces will blend into one another, giving the impression of consistency and flow, while at the same time displaying different influences and traditions. This furniture, floors, lines and dark woods of this lounge have a more minimalistic approach than the home's other lounges

Mukesh Ambani 27 storey building Antilia: Ball Room
Ball Room : The most striking features of the Antilla ballroom are the crystal chandeliers that will take up approximately 80% of the ceiling. The silver stairways lead to a central landing, behind which two retractable doors can open to display works of art. There is also a stage for entertainment or speeches, with a projection screen behind it. A kitchen, about the same size as the ballroom itself, can service hundreds of guests

Mukesh Ambani 27 storey building Antilia: Entertainment Level
Entertainment Level : It's very common in large homes to have a theater or screening room, but usually they're just large projection screens with a few nice seats. The Ambani's theater is more like those seen in George Lucas' Skywalker Ranch or Frank Pritt's Portabello Estate--a full-fledged theater, indistinguishable from a cinema. A wine room, snack bar and entertaining space, including couches and tables, fill out the room.
Mukesh Ambani 27 storey building Antilia: Health Level
Health Level : The indoor/outdoor health level features a lap pool and Jacuzzi that take in views of the city skyline, as well as lounge chairs shaded by trees. Yoga and dance studios, changing rooms for men and women, gyms and a solarium with a juice bar fill out the interior space. There are plans to include an ice room in the center space, where the Ambanis could sit on a hot Mumbai day to cool off in a man-made snow flurry.

Sony introduces Internet TV, the world's first Google TV

Sony introduces Internet TV, the world's first Google TV
If you want to try out Google's brand new "TV operating system" before the end of the year, you're gonna have to buy a Sony Internet TV.

Sony unveiled its newest TV line at a media event last night in New York City. The new model line, known simply as Sony Internet TV, gives users access to the Web like never before. Unlike current Internet-connected TV sets that give users closed, restricted access to the Internet - meaning they can only use special online apps - Google TV literally lets users access everything on the Internet, from their TV. No external box required.

The TV platform actually incorporates a full Web browser, Chrome, letting users do whatever they want on the World Wide Web, while also watching TV. That's something else unique about Google TV, because most other IPTV applications force TV playback to be halted in order to devote all of the unit's resources to the app.

Sony Internet TV can keep a live TV picture-in-picture box on the bottom-right of the screen no matter what other apps or websites you're running in the background. The TV itself has an Intel Atom chip inside it to power everything. It also has 8 GB of storage, unlike the very measly handful of megabytes Samsung offers on its Internet-connected TVs.

The more intriguing part of Sony's new TV is the remote control - a small handheld with a full Qwerty keypad, allowing users to easily type in Web addresses or run searches.

Speaking of searches, that's where Google TV shines. Punch in "NBA" and you'll not only get to see when the next NBA live event is airing, you'll be able to search your DVR (if and only if you have Dish Network) for any "NBA" shows you have recorded, you can search the Web for NBA, or look up NBA on your favorite social networking site.

Sony Internet TV models will be available initially in four sizes: 24, 32, 40, and 46 inches. The price range goes from $600 to $1400. That's not a bad deal for any IPTV, let alone one from Sony.

If all this sounds at all interesting to you, you won't have to wait long to try it out. Sony Internet TVs go on sale at Sony Style stores across the country beginning this weekend. They'll also be available in Best Buy on October 24.
