There is a good news for consumers who had been waiting long to book a flat. Property rates in the housing segment are likely to witness correction of up to 20%. The industry seems to take note of the fact that the rates, that were unrealistic and based on speculation, have to be corrected.

But experts maintain that this correction would not be comparable to the slowdown that the real estate industry experienced in 2008.

While speaking at the National Conference in New Delhi on Tuesday (Nov 30), Sachin Sandhir, Managing Director and Country Head, RICS India, said, “However, I don’t see it as anything close to that. I see it more as a 15 to 20 percent correction in markets like Mumbai, the National Capital Region (Delhi NCR) and may be some tier 1 and tier 2 cities.”

Indian Gross Domestic product (GDP) has registered a growth of 8.9 percent in the second quarter (July-Sept) of the current financial year (2010-11). The Central Statistical Organisation (CSO) released the figures of sectoral growth on Tuesday (NOV’ 30).

Economic advisor to Finance Ministry, Kaushik Basu, termed the second quarter growth rate as very heartening one and expressed hopes that 9% growth rate in the present fiscal itself is not an impossible target now.

“It’s really very heartening news…8.9% growth rate in second quarter. This is a performance with no base effect. It shows the resilience of the economy. All I can say is that we were expecting 9% growth rate in 2010-11. But today’s news is so wonderful that one is beginning to feel that the future may be upon us sooner than what we were expecting earlier.” said Kaushik Basu.

The current spurt in growth is largely driven by robust farm output and services sector growth in the second quarter.  Finance Secretary Ashok Chawala expressed his happiness over the GDP numbers and said that the country should hope for the best results regarding the growth of economy during the fiscal year 2010-11

“In any case we have been saying 8.5-8.75% growth rate for the full year. It’s very difficult to whether we will breach 9% but let’s hope for the best,” said Ashok Chawala.

In an attempt to break the deadlock in the Parliament over the 2G scam, Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar has convened an all party meeting on Tuesday (Nov 30). Meeting is being attended by several party leaders.

Despite several attempts by Congress-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government to break the deadlock, Opposition seems to be firm on its demand of constituting Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe 2G spectrum scam.

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday (Nov’30) said, there is no need to press panic button in the wake of housing loan scandal involving Life Insurance Corporation and several public sector banks and reasserted that the investors' money in institutions is safe.

Pranab Mukherjee, Finance Minister, said “As far as the issue is concerned, one point I would like to emphasize, there is no need to press the panic button. I am in touch with the RBI Governor, Chairman LIC on all the loans that have been given to various concerns, they are well protected, money of the investors in these institutions are quite safe and all the appropriate measures will be taken, but it is not possible for me to give any detailed indication.”

Chhattisgarh on Monday (Nov’29) got approval of the Government of India to establish National Institute for Management of Biotic Stresses (NIMBS) in the state.  The institute will be the first national research institute for the agriculture sector in the state.

“In Chhattisgarh, 80 per cent people are dependent on agriculture. Their crops face a problem of biological factors like crop-insects and fungi. If there is good research in that department, it would be a great help. 15-20 per cent of the produce would be saved,” said Dr. A S R A S Shastri, ex dean, College of Agriculture, Raipur.     

Foreign Minister Somanahalli Mallaiah Krishna on Monday (Nov’29) announced that Russian President Dmitry Medvedev will pay an official visit to India on December 21-22. SM Krishna announced this during a joint press-conference with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov.

Andhra Pradesh cabinet expansion will take place on Wednesday (Dec’1st). This has been announced by the state’s new Chief Minister N. Kiran Kumar Reddy in New Delhi on Sunday (Nov’28), after his meeting with party’s central leaders.

Sources also say that five ministers of previous K Rosaiah cabinet will not get berths in the new cabinet. The five are said to be loyal to former chief minister Y S Rajshekhar Reddy’s family.

CM Reddy was speaking to media after his meetings with party president Sonia Gandhi and senior party leaders like Veerappa Moily and Ahmed Patel.

“Members of the new cabinet of the state will take oath on Wednesday. Deputy Chief Minister will be in Telangana region,” said N. Kiran Kumar Reddy.

According to the data available in India, we need approximately 1,75,000 kidneys, 50,000 hearts and 50,000 livers for transplantation every year. But annually, only around 5000 kidney and 400 liver transplants and just 10-15 heart transplants are done in the country.

Comparing the spread of Sickle Cell disease in Chhattisgarh to that in some African countries, the Sickle Cell Disease International Organization (SCDIO) asked India on Friday (NOV’ 26) to set up a centre in India for surveillance and treatment of the genetic blood disorder.

Speaking at a conference on Sickle disease in Raipur, Edwige E Badassou, Chairman of the French arm of SCDIO, suggested that since incidence of the disease is very high in India, setting up a centre for surveillance and treatment of the genetic blood disorder must be a priority.


People with Sickle Cell disease have Red Blood Cells that contain Hemoglobin S, an abnormal type of hemoglobin. Sometimes these red blood cells become sickle-shaped and have problem passing through small blood vessels.

Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh on Friday (Nov’ 12) said, no country with tiger habitats takes tiger conservation as seriously as India. He was speaking at an event of World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) in New Delhi.

Jairam Ramesh said that India has half of the total population of wild tigers in the world, for which he gave credit to the country’s systematic and intensive tiger conservation program.

He said while India takes the task of conserving the tiger population seriously, other countries like China just do the talks but no conservation.

In an unusual event, a wild pig injured an eight-year-old tigress in Patrampur forest range near Gadhinegi village in Udham Singh district. The tigress strayed into the forest from Jim Corbett National Park.

Forest officials confirmed the incident. “The tigress got injured while fighting with pig for food. We are taking care of her and as soon as she recovers, we will let her free in the forest,” said Aryan Pandey, Ranger, Jim Corbett National Park.

Fight for food among carnivores is quite a regular phenomenon in the forest kingdom. However, the fact that a wild pig injured one of the strongest predators makes the incident one of its kind.

President Barack Obama gets 12 stitches in his lip on Friday after being hit in the face with an elbow while playing basketball, the White House said, stating that the injury was an accident.

The injury was caused by Rey Decerega, director of programmes for the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute, the White House said.

Home Minister P Chidambaram on Friday (Nov 26) announced central grant of rupees 25 crore for development in each of the 60 naxal affected districts.

P Chidambaram, Home Minister said, “This year, we will be giving 25 crore to each 60 naxal affected districts for development. A three member committee will be made available, who will interact with District Education Officer, District Health Officer, and District Magistrate to decide the immediate development works to be projected in these districts.”

Mobile phone subscribers in Haryana will be the first in the country to be able to retain their mobile numbers even after shifting to another service provider as Mobile Number Portability (MNP) service will be launched in the state Thursday(25th Nov).

Promising to ensure the availability of petroleum products for all round development, central government on Wednesday (Nov 24) said the talks are on with different countries to setup pipelines to facilitate gas supply to India.

Kiran Kumar Reddy will be sworn in as the new Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh today after K Rosaiah resigned on Wednesday citing health reasons.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Wednesday (Nov’ 24) arrested senior executives of different banks including the chief executive officer of LIC Housing Finance Limited in connection with allegedly a multi-crore housing loan scam. The executives of these banks allegedly gave loans to private builders in exchange for bribes.

A fifteen-member team of International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday (Nov 24) visited Punjab Cricket Association’s (PCA) stadium in Mohali. During its three-hour long stay in the stadium, team inspected various aspects of preparations to host matches for the forthcoming World Cup beginning from Feb 19, 2011.
