Pakistan bans private Internet browsing

Pakistan bans private Internet browsing
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has directed all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to prevent internet users from using technology that would allow them to privately browse the internet.

A PTA spokesman said that the directive was intended only to stop militants from using secure Internet connections to communicate with each other, but admitted that this could only be done by preventing all Internet users in Pakistan from using virtual private networks ( VPNs), The Express Tribune reports.

A VPN allows two or more users to share data without letting anyone else monitor it.

Meanwhile, the PTA has become increasingly aggressive in blocking websites in the country. The entire website of Rolling Stone, a pop-culture and politics magazine, has been blocked since July.

Anna Hazare ends fast; says fight for change has begun

Anna Hazare has ended his 13-day long fast, after the Parliament cleared his three demands late last evening.

He broke the fast with coconut water and honey. He said "stay away from the media".

"This the victory of the people of India. All the efforts that you have put in in the last 13 days, have born fruit. I would like to thank the media for helping this victory happen. I thank those who continously cared for my health. I want to thank the members of the civil society," he said.

Anna Hazare ends fast; says fight for change has begun

"It is a victory of every India." "Please sit where you are. Let me finish my speech."

Kiran Bedi informs Anna that there is no place to be seated in the crowd.

"The example you have set by protesting peacefully, without violence is an important thing to be noted about this protest. It's an example for the people of the world."

"People's Parliament is bigger than the Delhi Parliament."

"It's a request that this protest has brought about a hope that a change is possible by people's power. We have to bring about the changein compliance with the Constitution. This protest has restored faith in a corruption-free country."

"We have to change the election system. When people say they don't like the electoral candidates, they should be able to vote for none. The election should be null and void if majority bote for none. People should have a right to say they do not support any party."

"We have to bring about a change in the education sector.

"The fight for change has just begun."

"If you want to be Anna, be pure in thought and action. Wearing a 'I am Anna' topi won't make you Anna. Learn to sacrifice, this is a land built on sarifices. Lead an untarnished life."

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's letter was handed over to Anna by Union Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, following which Anna announced that he would be breaking his fast today.

As soon as he breaks the fast, he will be admitted to Mdanta Medicity hospital in Gurgaon.

Earlier:

Activist Arvind Kejriwal is thanking Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Parliament.

Anna Hazare is going to break his fast shortly.

He is thanking the Delhi police, those who made food for the protestors at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan.

He is also thanking Sri Sri Ravi Shankar for mediating, Art of Living volunteers, those who participated in the protest in support of Hazare.

"We are not against the Constitution. Some Dalits have expressed worry that we have demanded amendment of the Constitution. But this is not the case."

"Under the Lokpal fight, we promise people right to recall, judicial reforms and other such movements."

He made people take an oath that they will "not bribe or accept bribe".

Anna Hazare to end 12-day fast on Sunday, after historic Parliament debate

After 12 days that had India on the edge, Anna Hazare was poised to end his fast Sunday morning, capping a day of highs and lows that saw a historic Parliament debate a possible anti-corruption legislation that ended with the broad acceptance of key demands of the social reformer.

Anna Hazare to end 12-day fast on Sunday, after historic Parliament debate

The eight-hour debate, called on a weekend, saw parliamentarians pack both houses to dissect an issue that has held the nation in thrall since August 16, when 74-year-old Hazare began his fast for a strong bill to have a Lokpal institution to tackle pervasive corruption, prompting tens of thousands of people across the country take to the streets and bringing the government virtually to its knees.

"Parliament has spoken. It is the will of the people," a smiling Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said while coming out of the house after the debate that ended at 8pm.

As the news reached Ramlila Maidan, where Hazare was on his fast in the presence oftens of thousands of people, thanksgiving prayers were conducted for the successful conduct of a movement that has seen few parallels in 64 years of India's history as an independent nation.

"We have won only half the battle," said Hazare standing before wildly cheering crowds and flanked by his key aides and union minister Vilasrao Deshmukh, former Maharashtra chief minister who has been an interlocutor.

Looking none the worse for his ordeal, Hazare paid tribute to the common people for making the government bend to its demands and said he would break his fast at 10am Sunday.

Hazare, 74, had said he would end his fast only when the resolution accommodated the three key issues - having Lok Ayuktas in every state, citizen's charters for government departments and inclusion of lower bureaucracy in the Lokpal's ambit.

Oscillating between hope and despair, the fluid situation seemed headed towards some solution whenFinance Minister Pranab Mukherjee expressed in the Lok Sabha "a broad sense of the house" that includes an in-principle acceptance of the three demands by Hazare.

There was neither any resolution nor a voice vote that was expected at the end of the debate, just desk-thumping by members drawn from all parties. The scenes were replayed in the Rajya Sabha a short while later.

The government and the opposition showed rare unanimity of views on the parliament's prerogative to make laws during the special debate on the Lokpal issue in both houses, with both sides agreeing on the need for a strong Lokpal (ombudsman) and eradicating corruption.

A senior BJP leader told reporters that there was no opposition and the Lok Sabha was in complete unanimity that these issues need to be looked into "there was no need for voting", he said.

Amid the thumping of desks from MPs, Mukherjee made it clear that the outcome of the proceedings would be submitted to the parliamentary standing committee examining the Lokpal bill. The standing committee would bring a revised legislation before the house, he said.

"Our democracy is powerful enough, strong enough and flexible enough to accommodate different viewpoints," he said.

Just a while earlier, it had seemed that this day too would end without any concrete solution. Hazare's aides had only a few hours earlier accusing the Manmohan Singh governmmentof reneging on its pledge to move a resolution on the Lokpal bill in parliament.

Law Minister Salman Khurshid had held talks with activists Arvind Kejriwal and Prashant Bhushan, who said after the meeting that the government had refused to move a resolution over the three key demands.

Mukherjee, BJP leader Sushma Swaraj and Science and Technology Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh were involved in the last ditch effort to break the logjam.

While the confusion had continued, thousands still packed into the sprawling Ramlila ground. Filmstar Aamir Khan made an appearance, exhorting parliament to pass the legislation but also requesting Hazare to end his fast.

Sushma Swaraj said in the Lok Sabha that the anti-graft campaign had brought the issue of Lokpal to the people and the massive support it garnered indicated that people's emotions had galvanised against the "innumerable scams" and people were "fed up" of increasing corruption.

Govt says yes to Anna, Jan Lokpal in Parliament tomorrow

Hours after the Prime Minister paid sincere tribute to Anna Hazare and offered a new compromise, the glimmer of a truce appeared at Ramlila Maidan, where Anna's anti-corruption protest drew its usual huge crowds.

Govt says yes to Anna, Jan Lokpal in Parliament tomorrow

Anna who is 74 and has not eaten for ten days, explained what might prompt him to end his fast. "If you are serious," he said referring to the Prime Minister, "Let's start a debate tomorrow in Parliament on the Jan Lokpal Bill. There are three points of dispute... we will test you on these." He said if there is consensus on these issues, he will consider ending his fast, but may choose to continue his protest.

The government has agreed. So tomorrow, a debate will begin on all versions of the Lokpal Bill including Anna's. Named for the independent anti-corruption agency that it creates, the Lokpal Bill currently exists in three versions prepared by the government, Team Anna and a group of activists headed by Aruna Roy. The PM suggested in parliament this morning  that all three drafts  can  be discussed by Parliament; a compilation of the best features from each could then be sent to a parliamentary committee for detailed study and feedback.

The PM's intervention brought two significant rewards: Direct negotiations with Anna, rather than his associates; and respect for his acknowledgement of Anna's role in fighting corruption. Dr Manmohan Singh, who has been criticised for appearing too distant during Anna's movement, said, "His point has been registered. I respect his idealism. Anna Hazare has become the embodiment of people's concern and disgust with corruption. I applaud him, I salute him."

Dr Singh then sent  his party's Vilasrao Deshmukh  to meet Anna at his protest camp and convey that a debate in Parliament can begin tomorrow on all versions of the Lokpal Bill. Mr Deshmukh knows Anna well, both men are from Maharashtra where the Congressman has served twice as Chief Minister. Mr Deshmukh delivered the Prime Minister's offer, and took back Anna's request for an urgent debate on the Jan Lokpal Bill.

So far, Anna's team has three demands that have been contentious for the government.  Now, ministers are searching for solutions to these.
The first is that the Lokpal -a new independent agency to investigate corruption - must be allowed to cover junior bureaucrats so that graft is combatted "from the villages to our ministries."
The second is that the Lokpal Act must be introduced not just at the Centre but in states.
Finally, he wants government departments to adopt a citizen's charter that would punish officials for under-performance.

Salt-to-software conglomerate Tata group, the country's largest in terms of market wealth, has also taken the biggest hit of over Rs 91,320 crore ($20 billion) in its market valuation since July.

Indian stock market has been under tremendous pressure in recent weeks, primarily due to global economic worries, and its overall valuation has fallen by an estimated Rs 9,13,200 crore ($200 billion) so far in the current quarter, beginning July 1.

Tatas lose Rs 91000 cr market valuation since July, Ambanis Rs 68000 cr

The loss suffered by Ratan Tata-led group accounts for over 10% of the overall loss in the market and is also higher than a cumulative erosion of Rs 68,490 crore ($15 billion) from the stock wealth of two Ambani groups.

While Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries group has lost close to Rs 45,150 crore ($9.89 billion), the group led by younger Ambani sibling Anil has seen little over Rs 22,830 crore ($5 billion) being eroded from its market wealth in this period.

An analysis of market wealth data of large corporate groups shows that the business houses having suffered significant erosion in their valuation also include Vedanta, Adani, ICICI, Infosys, Wipro and Jindal groups.

On the other hand, the losses have been relatively less for groups like Birla, Mahindra, Bajaj, HDFC and L&T, while that of Sunil Mittal-led Bharti group has actually seen a marginal increase of Rs 19 crore since July 1.

The Indian market's total valuation has fallen from Rs 67,31,000 crore ($1.53 trillion) at the beginning of this quarter to Rs 59,29,250 crore ($1.33 trillion) currently.

The market benchmark Sensex has dropped by over 2,500 points or about 13% in this period.

Girls, Boys sexually Maturing Much Earlier Than Previous Generations

A new study shows that like girls, boys are also maturing physically much earlier than previous generations with the age of sexual maturity decreasing by about 2.5 months each decade.

Joshua Goldstein, director of the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research in Rostock (MPIDR), has used mortality data to prove this trend, which until now was difficult to decipher.

Girls, Boys sexually Maturing Much Earlier Than Previous Generations

What had already been established for girls now seems to also be true for boys: the time period during which young people are sexually mature but socially not yet considered adults is expanding.

"The reason for earlier maturity for boys, as with girls, is probably because nutrition and disease environments are getting more favourable for it," said demographer Goldstein.

What is the Jan Lokpal Bill, why it is important ?

The Jan Lokpal Bill (Citizen's ombudsman Bill) is a draft anti-corruption bill drawn up by prominent civil society activists seeking the appointment of a Jan Lokpal, an independent body that would investigate corruption cases, complete the investigation within a year and envisages trial in the case getting over in the next one year.

What is the Jan Lokpal Bill, why it's important

Drafted by Justice Santosh Hegde (former Supreme Court Judge and former Lokayukta of Karnataka), Prashant Bhushan (Supreme Court Lawyer) and Arvind Kejriwal (RTI activist), the draft Bill envisages a system where a corrupt person found guilty would go to jail within two years of the complaint being made and his ill-gotten wealth being confiscated. It also seeks power to the Jan Lokpal to prosecute politicians and bureaucrats without government permission.

Retired IPS officer Kiran Bedi and other known people like Swami Agnivesh, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, Anna Hazare and Mallika Sarabhai are also part of the movement, called India Against Corruption. Its website describes the movement as "an expression of collective anger of people of India against corruption. We have all come together to force/request/persuade/pressurize the Government to enact the Jan Lokpal Bill. We feel that if this Bill were enacted it would create an effective deterrence against corruption."

Anna Hazare, anti-corruption crusader, went on a fast-unto-death in April, demanding that this Bill, drafted by the civil society, be adopted. Four days into his fast, the government agreed to set up a joint committee with an equal number of members from the government and civil society side to draft the Lokpal Bill together. The two sides met several times but could not agree on fundamental elements like including the PM under the purview of the Lokpal. Eventually, both sides drafted their own version of the Bill.

The government has introduced its version in Parliament in this session. Team Anna is up in arms and calls the government version the "Joke Pal Bill." Anna Hazare declared that he would begin another fast in Delhi on August 16. Hours before he was to begin his hunger strike, the Delhi Police detained and later arrested him. There are widespread protests all over the country against his arrest.

The website of the India Against Corruption movement calls the Lokpal Bill of the government an "eyewash" and has on it a critique of that government Bill.

A look at the salient features of Jan Lokpal Bill:

1. An institution called LOKPAL at the centre and LOKAYUKTA in each state will be set up

2. Like Supreme Court and Election Commission, they will be completely independent of the governments. No minister or bureaucrat will be able to influence their investigations.

3. Cases against corrupt people will not linger on for years anymore: Investigations in any case will have to be completed in one year. Trial should be completed in next one year so that the corrupt politician, officer or judge is sent to jail within two years.

4. The loss that a corrupt person caused to the government will be recovered at the time of conviction.

5. How will it help a common citizen: If any work of any citizen is not done in prescribed time in any government office, Lokpal will impose financial penalty on guilty officers, which will be given as compensation to the complainant.

6. So, you could approach Lokpal if your ration card or passport or voter card is not being made or if police is not registering your case or any other work is not being done in prescribed time. Lokpal will have to get it done in a month's time. You could also report any case of corruption to Lokpal like ration being siphoned off, poor quality roads been constructed or panchayat funds being siphoned off. Lokpal will have to complete its investigations in a year, trial will be over in next one year and the guilty will go to jail within two years.

7. But won't the government appoint corrupt and weak people as Lokpal members? That won't be possible because its members will be selected by judges, citizens and constitutional authorities and not by politicians, through a completely transparent and participatory process.

8. What if some officer in Lokpal becomes corrupt? The entire functioning of Lokpal/ Lokayukta will be completely transparent. Any complaint against any officer of Lokpal shall be investigated and the officer dismissed within two months.

9. What will happen to existing anti-corruption agencies? CVC, departmental vigilance and anti-corruption branch of CBI will be merged into Lokpal. Lokpal will have complete powers and machinery to independently investigate and prosecute any officer, judge or politician.

10. It will be the duty of the Lokpal to provide protection to those who are being victimized for raising their voice against corruption.

Every single hour of TV watched reduces life expectancy of 22 minutes!

Every single hour of TV watched reduces life expectancy of 22 minutes!

Spending your days in front of television is as dangerous as smoking and obesity, a new Australian study has said, warning it may shorten ones lifespan.

The findings were released by a University of Queensland team led by Lennert Veerman of School of Population Health.

The study estimated that every single hour of TV watched after age 25 was associated with a reduction in life expectancy of around 22 minutes.

Given that Australians watch on average around two hours of TV a day, that would reduce life expectancy at birth by 1.8 years for men and about 1.5 years for women.

Those small proportion of people who watch six hours of TV a day would reduce their lifespan by 4.8 years. According to conservative estimates, every cigarette took 11 minutes off a smoker's life expectancy and compared the risk to that run by television viewers.

But the study said that while smoking rates were on the decline, almost everybody watched TV, and TV viewing should be seen as posing a serious threat to public health at a population level.

Last year, another Australian study, by David Dunstan and colleagues from the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute in Melbourne, found an hour of TV viewing a day led to an 8 per cent increase in the risk of premature death.

55 mn jobs needed by 2015 to keep current employment level

India requires about 55 million additional jobs by 2015 to maintain its current ratio of employed to total population at 39%, research firm Crisil said today.

In a report 'Employment in India: Uneven and Weak', Crisil said the country has to nearly double the job creation rate, witnessed during 2005-10, to achieve this number.

55 mn jobs needed by 2015 to keep current employment level

"Job creation has clearly not kept pace with the GDP growth. The GDP growth increased to 8.6% during 2005-10 from 6% during 2000-05, but the net addition to jobs remained almost flat at around 27 million during the two time periods," Crisil Chief Economist DK Joshi said.

He also said that combined with a decline in the number of self-employed persons, this sharply reduced the employment intensity (number of persons per lakh of real GDP) to 1 in 2005-10 period from 1.7 in the preceding five years.

The study -- based on National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO) data on employment -- also said that generating 55 million jobs would pose an overwhelming challenge without appropriate policy support.

It also said that employment potential of fast growing manufacturing and services sector could not be fully exploited due to the lack of enabling policy environment.

"In manufacturing, which is a crucial source of jobs for relatively low-skilled labour, [jobs] declined by 7% despite a faster growth in manufacturing output," Crisil said.

It also pointed out that employment growth in financial intermediation and business services slowed down during 2005-10 period.

However, job creation was up by around 70% in the construction sector, mainly comprising up of casual jobs.

The report said that there was a decline in number of self employed people by 25.5 million in 2005-10 period as compared to an increase of 65.5 million in the preceding five years.

Similarly, around 65% of the total jobs were created in rural areas during this period.

Referring to job creation patterns, it said that high economic growth alone would not be able to create jobs as it required appropriate policy measures in this regard.

"The role of policy assumes greater importance now since the weak growth in advanced countries is likely to hurt job growth in export-oriented sectors in India," Crisil said.

The agency said that policy gridlock in labour reforms remained the primary cause of insufficient labour demand in manufacturing. In financial intermediation and business services, labour supply had not kept pace with growing demand due to shortage of highly educated skilled labour.

Anna Hazare arrested and sent to Tihar Jail for 7 days

Anna Hazare was today sent to seven days' judicial custody after he refused to sign a personal bond and come out on bail following his arrest.

Anna Hazare arrested and sent to Tihar Jail for 7 days

Hazare, who was arrested in the morning on grounds of apprehension of breach of peace following his intention to defy prohibitory orders to go on indefinite hunger strike, was produced before a Special Executive Magistrate.

Delhi Police Commissioner B K Gupta told a press conference that the police was not keen that he should be sent to judicial custody.

Gupta said the police was prepared for his being released on a personal bond if the Gandhian would have given an undertaking that he will not defy Section 144 of the CrPC that prohibits gathering of five or more people and also ask his supporters not to do so.

Sources said since Hazare refused to give an undertaking, the Magistrate remanded him to a seven-day judicial custody.

He is likely to be taken to Tihar jail where he will spend time in judicial custody. Three other leading activists of the team Hazare--Kiran Bedi, Arvind Kejriwal and Manoj Sisodia-- were also sent to judicial custody on similar grounds.

10 things to know about Anna Hazare and Jan Lok Pal Bill.. !

10 things to know about Anna Hazare 'n Jan Lok Pal Bill.. !

1. Who is Anna Hazare?
An ex-army man. Fought 1965 Indo-Pak War

2. What's so special about him?
He built a village Ralegaon Siddhi in Ahamad Nagar district, Maharashtra

3. So what?
This village is a self-sustained model village. Energy is produced in the village itself from solar power, biofuel and wind mills.

In 1975, it used to be a poverty clad village. Now it is one of the richest village in India. It has become a model for self-sustained, eco-friendly & harmonic village.

4. Ok,...?
This guy, Anna Hazare was awarded Padma Bhushan and is a known figure for his social activities.

5. Really, what is he fighting for?
He is supporting a cause, the amendment of a law to curb corruption in India.

6. How that can be possible?
He is advocating for a Bil, The Jan Lokpal Bill (The Citizen Ombudsman Bill), that will form an autonomous authority who will make politicians (ministers), beurocrats (IAS/IPS) accountable for their deeds.

8. It's an entirely new thing right..?
In 1972, the bill was proposed by then Law minister Mr. Shanti Bhushan. Since then it has been neglected by the politicians and some are trying to change the bill to suit their theft (corruption).

7. Oh.. He is going on a hunger strike for that whole thing of passing a Bill ! How can that be possible in such a short span of time?
The first thing he is asking for is: the government should come forward and announce that the bill is going to be passed.

Next, they make a joint committee to DRAFT the JAN LOKPAL BILL. 50% goverment participation and 50% public participation. Because you cant trust the government entirely for making such a bill which does not suit them.

8. Fine, What will happen when this bill is passed?
A LokPal will be appointed at the centre. He will have an autonomous charge, say like the Election Commission of India. In each and every state, Lokayukta will be appointed. The job is to bring all alleged party to trial in case of corruptions within 1 year. Within 2 years, the guilty will be punished. Not like, Bofors scam or Bhopal Gas Tragedy case, that has been going for last 25 years without any result.

9. Is he alone? Whoelse is there in the fight with Anna Hazare?
Baba Ramdev, Ex. IPS Kiran Bedi, Social Activist Swami Agnivesh, RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal and many more.

Prominent personalities like Aamir Khan is supporting his cause.

10. Ok, got it. What can I do?
At least we can spread the message. How?

Putting status message, links, video, changing profile pics.

At least we can support Anna Hazare and the cause for uprooting corruption from India.

At least we can hope that his Hunger Strike does not go in vain.

At least we can pray for his good health.

Ganga pollution kills 1 million people every year

Ganga pollution kills 1 million people every year
Senior BJP leader LK Advani on Sunday expressed concerns over the increasing level of pollution in the river Ganga, saying it was claiming more lives than bomb blasts.

In his latest blog posting, Advani quoted Swami Chidananda Saraswati of Parmarth Niketan, Rishikesh, to argue that the pollution in the Ganga is a serious matter.

“Today most people do not realise that nearly a million people living along the banks of the Ganga die each year due to illnesses caused by its polluted water...”

“A few dozen people dying in bomb blasts in India becomes big news worldwide, and rightly so. But the tragic deaths of many people who are dependent on the Ganga goes unnoticed even in India. We must change this,” he said, quoting Swami Chidanand.

“(The) Ganga is languishing in such polluted state that people hesitate to bathe in its waters even in Kashi. This has been caused by reckless and ill-planned industrialisation and urbanisation, made worse by lack of elementary civic facilities in towns and villages along it,” Advani observed.

In the upper reaches of the river, hydro-electric projects have caused considerable damage to the Ganga and its natural ecology, leading to drying up of long stretches of the river-bed and depriving the nearby villagers of their main source of water, he said.

Suggesting measures to clean the river, the BJP leader quoted Swami Chidanand, “We must launch a mission, which I call the 3-T Mission — toilet in every home, tap in every home bringing clean water, and tree-plantation on a massive scale in every village and town.”

“Millions of Indians abroad would be inspired if India takes up this comprehensive Ganga Mission. They would even be willing to make generous contribution to this project,” Advani said on his blog, quoting Swami Chidanand.

Praja Rajyam to merge with Congress on August 20 2011

Praja Rajyam to merge with Congress on August 20 2011
The Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) will officially be merged with Congress on August 20, according to PRP president Chiranjeevi.

"We decided to officially merge Praja Rajyam with Congress on August 20, the birth anniversary of Rajeev Gandhi. On August 20 and 21, senior party (PRP) leaders will take Congress party membership at Gandhi Bhavan," Chiranjeevi told reporters here.

Chiranjeevi was earlier scheduled to meet AICC chief Sonia Gandhi between August 7 and 10, to formally take primary membership of Congress. However since Gandhi is undergoing treatment in USA, the PRP chief is expected to take Congress membership from Rahul Gandhi.

The PRP, which has 18 seats in the 294-seat State Assembly, had announced the merger plans in February.

The PRP has already technically merged with the Congress party in Andhra Pradesh, even though a public meeting could not be organised to formalise the amalgamation.

The current political uncertainty in the state over the bifurcation issue has jeopardised Chiranjeevi's plans to organise a grand meeting with Sonia or Rahul Gandhi to formalise the merger.

No more tax free zones in the India: Pranab Mukherjee

No more tax free zones in the India: Pranab Mukherjee
Union Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee on Saturday said that there would be no more tax-free zones in the country.

Tax-free zone status in Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand was being withdrawn gradually following opposition by different states. Renewal of tax free zone status of Sikkim, which would expire in 2017, would be reviewed on the basis of the Socio-economic conditions of the state at that time.

Instead of tax free zone, the Centre was considering creating special economic zones in backward districts.

Inaugurating a residential quarter complex and guest house of income tax department, Mukherjee urged IT officials to achieve 10% more collection than the target fixed.

The target of income tax collection was fixed at Rs 5,32,000 crore this fiscal as against last year's Rs 4,46,000 crore.
