Miss Universe 2011 Leila Lopes Used fake documents to join the contest?

A new and serious controversy has been hunting the newly crown Miss Universe 2011. According to reports, Miss Angola used false or fake documents to join the contest.

The scandalous controversy started in a news article from Daily Mail, a newspaper in London, released on September 16, 2011. According to the broadsheet, Miss Angola - Leila Lopes used false documents to get into the pageant.

The London newspaper said that a man named as Charles Mukano allegedly helped Lopes to join the Miss Angola UK, a beauty contest for Angolan women that are staying in london. What's wrong here is that a claim said that Leila Lopes is living in Angola during the said competition.

The Argentinian newspaper Infobae published a report Thursday alleging that Lopes was unfairly allowed to participate in a Miss Angola competition for Angolan citizens living in the UK, even though she has never lived outside of Angola, reports ABC News.

Infobae cites reports in Angolan media that allege that Mukano may have even bribed judges in England to ensure Lopes' win.

Lopes was the first Miss Universe from her country, but came under attack in the following days by Miss France and fans of Miss Phillipines as undeserving of the crown.

Number of Americans living below the poverty line highest in last 50 Years

Another 2.6 million people slipped into poverty in the United States last year, the Census Bureau reported on Tuesday, and the number of Americans living below the official poverty line, 46.2 million people, was the highest number in the 52 years the bureau has been publishing figures on it.

Number of Americans living below the poverty line highest in last 50 Years

The bureau's findings were worse than many economists expected, and brought into sharp relief the toll the past decade - including the painful declines of the financial crisis and recession -had taken on Americans at the middle and lower parts of the income ladder. It is also fresh evidence that the disappointing economic recovery has done nothing for the country's poorest citizens.

The report comes as President Obama gears up to try to pass a jobs bill, and analysts said the bleak numbers could help him make his case for urgency. But they could also be used against him by Republican opponents seeking to highlight economic shortcomings on his watch.

The census report said that the percentage of Americans living below the poverty line last year, 15.1 percent, was the highest level since 1993. (The poverty line in 2010 for a family of four was $22,314.). Joblessness was the main culprit pushing more Americans into poverty. And this year is not likely to be any better, economists said.

Top 5 reasons Why Yahoo failed to compete with Google, Facebook

Top 5 reasons Why Yahoo failed to compete with Google, Facebook
1. Yahoo has been one of the most-visited sites on the Internet since its glory days as a Web portal. Yet as the rest of the Internet moved on to social networks and mobile devices, Yahoo has failed to keep up.

2. Yahoo failed to create a new digital world dominated by mobile phones and sites where the users are the content creators. Yahoo’s fired CEO focused on bolstering Yahoo's online media and original reporting, but neglected to develop the new social networking tools, video services or mobile apps that people now prefer to use.

3. Yahoo tried to become a media company by creating content, but they failed to follow Internet users and advertisers to cellphone screens and social networks. Meanwhile, the next generation of companies, like Google and Facebook, have happily satisfied the demand for information and entertainment, not by creating content but by building mobile and social networking services that attract users and, increasingly, valuable advertisers.

4. Yahoo has some shortcomings in their advertising technology. Whereas Google bought DoubleClick in 2007, display advertising company, to compete with Yahoo. Two years later Google had developed DoubleClick Ad Exchange, which was more efficient for buyers and sellers of ad space. It invested heavily to acquire or create tools for targeting, serving and optimizing online display ads. It has also invested in YouTube, its video site, to try to lure TV advertisers to display ads.

5. Google made revolutionary changes in Gmail, whereas there are no major additions in Yahoo mail. However, Yahoo mail still has more users when compared to Gmail.

On whole Yahoo's sites, like its home page, email service and sites for finance and entertainment still have a huge audience, 177.6 million per month.

Here are some of the graphs which shows falling trends of Yahoo and growing trends of Google and Facebook.

After Death, who owns your Facebook?

When you die, does your Facebook account die with you? Or that online photo album? What about your iTunes playlist, blogs or tweets?

Laws in the United States and elsewhere are vague on the fate of digital rights to online accounts after death, leading to complications and legal wrangling for survivors who want access to the online services of the deceased.

After Death, who owns your Facebook?

Legal experts say it's unclear who owns what in the Internet "cloud," and that in some cases the user agreement for email or social networking sites terminates when a person dies.

In the case of online photo albums, "those photos are yours and you have a copyright, but the problem is if you upload them to a site like Shutterfly, the property you own is now stuck behind a license," said Nathan Dosch, a Wisconsin attorney specializing in estate planning.

"The underlying asset is still owned by you but the access terminates on your death. The same can be said about emails."

Gerry Beyer, a professor at Texas Tech University School of Law, said the definition of "digital assets" remains subject to interpretation. A key issue is whether what is in the online accounts is "property" with any value.

This leaves open a great potential for litigation, he said.

Indian Cricketers, Film Stars have Black Money in Swiss banks

Whistleblower Rudolph Elmer has said Indian cricketers and film stars hold secret accounts in Swiss banks. While refusing to give out the names of the evaders, Elmer accused the Indian government of not doing enough on the black money front.

Indian cricketers, filmstars have black money in Swiss banks

"There is a need for global commitment and action," Headlines Today news channel quoted Elmer, who was released from jail on July 25, 2011, as saying on Monday.

In his first interview after being released from jail, Elmer told the channel that there is a need for global commitment towards tightening noose around tax evaders, who he said are ‘criminals’.

Fearing reprisals, Elmer declined to reveal the names of the "politicians, cricketers and filmstars". He said it's "all about approach", saying if the Indian government was at all serious about bringing back black money it could.

"The government is not committed. I think society has to put pressure on the Indian government to act. India is a big country, which is getting stronger by the day. It has the negotiating power," Elmer told Headlines Today.

Saying he can't give names because "I'll in serious problem", Elmer told Headlines Today, "I can't give a date, but it will happen sometime". He added the government was not doing enough.

Rudolf Elmer is a former employee of Swiss bank Julius Bar, a highly reputed Swiss bank.

He shook the world in January this year when he handed over to WikiLeaks a CD containing 2000 names of tax evaders. In that list figured the names of several Indians.

Anna Hazare Next agenda: Performance audit of MPs

After taking on the government over the Lokpal Bill, next on Anna Hazare's agenda is a performance audit on Members of Parliament. This is Team Anna's latest demand as it is currently in Anna's village Ralegan Siddhi deciding its next course of action in the anti-corruption movement.

Anna Hazare Next agenda: Performance audit of MPs

And to keep the pressure on the government, Mr Hazare is drafting a letter to the Prime Minister seeking his views on

* The right to recall a Member of Parliament
* And the right to reject candidates who stand for elections

"Anna ji is writing about these two specific points because they can be implemented straightaway," said Prashant Bhushan, one of the members of Team Anna.

"Mr Hazare also wants to know from PM what are his views on having a 'none of the above' button on ballot papers. Also, if majority of voters prefer the 'none of the above' button, there should be a provision to reject the candidate," he said.

Also part of the letter is the government's recently introduced Land Acquisition Bill. Anna wants the Prime Minister to assure citizens that no land acquisition decision would be taken without the consent of the gram sabha.

Key members of Team Anna - Arvind Kejriwal, Kiran Bedi, Santosh Hegde, Shanti Bhushan, Prashant Bhushan and Manish Sisodia - attended the meeting. The two-day brainstorming session, the first formal engagement of the group after Hazare's fast last month, would conclude today.

If day one focused on the letter to the PM, day two will focus on the Jan Lokpal Bill - how to keep the pressure up and the momentum going over the next few months.

Nasa warns of fresh risk from £468m satellite falling from space

The $750 million (£468 million) Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite (UARS) satellite, launched 20 years ago to study climate change, is set to breach the atmosphere within weeks.

Nasa warns of fresh risk from £468m satellite falling from space
In a new alert issued this week, officials warned pieces could land in densely populated areas on six continents including parts of Britain, Europe, North and South America and Asia.

Nasa claimed the risk to public safety from the “dead” satellite – which is orbiting just over 155 miles above the earth with an inclination of 57 degrees – was “extremely small”.

But senior space agency officials admitted they were “concerned” about the risk to billions of people when it starts falling uncontrolled out of orbit at any stage from later this month.

Nasa admitted more than half a tonne of metal from the satellite, which ran out of fuel in 2005, will survive as the majority of it will burn up after entering Earth's atmosphere.

Scientists estimate the debris footprint will be about 500 miles long with a 1-in-3,200 chance a part a satellite part could hit someone.

While Nasa did not know the exact areas it will fall, the projected danger zone has been narrowed to areas between 57 degrees north and 57 degrees south of the Equator.

These areas cover six continents and billions of people and three oceans.

The satellite, launched by the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1991, is 35 feet long, 15 feet in diameter and weighs nearly six tonnes. It was designed to operate for three years but six of its ten instruments are still working.

Men are Happier Than Women at Work: Study

It’s bad enough that men statistically tend to haul in bigger paychecks than women with comparable jobs and responsibilities. But adding insult to injury, they’re also happier than women with their work-life balance, a new survey shows.

Women across all demographics are 33 percent unhappier than their male counterparts, according to a survey of more 670 North American while-collar workers sponsored by Captivate Networks, a digital media company.

Men are Happier Than Women at Work: Study

When it comes to extreme happiness, men are consistently happier than women, the survey showed. The higher up the economic totem pole you climb, the better it gets for women, but a disparity exists there as well.

In the "extremely happy" category, men are 25 percent happier at work than women, 8 percent happier at home and 75 percent of them report being able to balance their work and personal lives.

Who is the profile of the extremely happy person at home and at work?  He's 39 years old, married, with a household income between $150,000 and $200,000, holds a senior management position, has one young child at home and is married to a wife who works part-time.

What's the profile of an unhappy person in the office and at home? She's a 42-year-old, unmarried woman with a household income under $100,000, working in a professional position such as a doctor or a lawyer.

The impact of a poor work-life balance can be serious. Nearly 87 percent of respondents indicated that work-life balance affects their health — particularly women, who report more stress, headaches, muscle tension, weight gain and depress than their male counterparts.

In fact, it was the employees working for companies without wellness programs that were 23 percent happier and balanced.

Tax collection up by 25% in Apr-Aug

The gross tax collection rose by 25 per cent to Rs 2.92 lakh crore during the April-August period of the current financial year.

The gross direct tax collection rose to Rs 1,54,360 crore during the first five months of the current fiscal, up by 25.89 pr cent from Rs 1,22,618 crore in the corresponding period a year ago, an official statement said.

Tax collection up by 25% in Apr-Aug

Direct taxes comprise mainly corporate tax and income tax.

The net direct tax collections, however, dropped 3.37 per cent to Rs 96,738 crore during the first five months due to higher refunds. The net direct tax collection was Rs 1,00,113 crore in the same period last fiscal.

Tax refunds rose a robust 156.04 per cent to Rs 57,622 crore during this period, pulling down net direct tax collections.

In case of indirect taxes, which mainly include customs, excise and service tax, the collection worked out to be over Rs 1.37 lakh crore in the April-August period, up by 23.6 per cent from 1.11 lakh crore in the year ago period, according to finance ministry sources.

The customs collection saw a decline of 6.7 per cent in August to Rs 10,120 crore. The decline is mainly on account of reduction in duty on petroleum products announced by the government in June to partly offset the impact of price hike on diesel, cooking gas and kerosene on common men.

Terror attacks in India: 11/7, 26/11, 13/7, 7/9... Number

Terror strikes  snuffing out dozens of innocent lives are meant to provoke anger, trigger outrage. But psychiatrists and sociologists say over the years there's been an emotional numbing of society, especially in cities like Delhi and Mumbai, which have witnessed a series of lethal bomb blasts over the past two decades.

Terror attacks in India: 11/7, 26/11, 13/7, 7/9... Number

"The frequency of such attacks has led to a process of habituation. The mind registers the event but the corresponding emotions that accompany such events don't happen among many of us. A brutal carnage gets reduced to a mere piece of information. And death just becomes a number. At a sub-conscious level, we begin to equate the event with a scene in a movie," says consultant psychiatrist Avdesh Sharma.

Sociologist Yogendra Singh offers a similar view. "There is a brutalization of consciousness, an attitude of non-feeling," he says.

The Wednesday blast reactions aptly sum up this mood of resignation. Statements by top political leaders - "We strongly condemn the cowardly act" - evoked a sense of deja vu, a feeling of watching reruns of old tapes.

The television coverage too had a hysterical sameness. And it's unlikely going to be different in the newspapers either. "There's a 'routinization' of response," says Singh.

Perhaps the identicalness of statements emerges from the truth that little or nothing has changed in India's efforts to combat and minimize terrorism - more so, because after an initial flurry of reports of "breakthroughs", the probes invariably hit a dead-end.

Writer Ira Trivedi typified the public feeling in her Thursday tweet. "The saddest part of the Delhi blast is that we are all a bit blase. We have seen too many of these in the recent past to care. Sad," she said.

Why? Psychiatrists say the mind wants to maintain as much normalcy as it can in any situation. It wants to wish away anything adversely affecting it.

Burdened by information and emotional overload, the mind automatically starts filtering things out. After every terror strike, our first response is to check if family and friends are okay. Once everyone's been accounted for, it's back to business as usual.

Says Sharma, "Nowadays there are so many negative things happening around you that if anything doesn't affect you directly, you feel it isn't worth bothering. Which is why people can eat, laugh and joke even while watching mutilated bodies on television."

The sense of alienation or indifference, especially in cities, also emerges from the fact that one generally doesn't know the victim. But the feelings change if one witnesses a terror strike in real life. Sharma says a shopkeeper who saw the Sarojini Nagar pre-Diwali 2005 blast that claimed 68 lives needed psychological help. "He had seen bodies with limbs missing and he had heard people screaming and crying. The images haunted him for months."

Terror-related strikes have been wounding India for long. But as clinical psychologist Rajat Mitra points out, the nation is yet to develop a problem-solving attitude in countering the menace. "As a society, we have been displaying a far greater degree of passivity and fatalism than mature societies when confronted with an overwhelming event," he says.

Mitra points out that unlike India, Israel regularly conducts workshops among the public that train them to react better to a terror situation. "In India too, people need training and orientation to break the pattern of fatalism and passivity. The government must work on this. Because passivity leads to disintegration," he says.

Todays music is promoting sexual aggression: Report

Popular music promotes sexual aggression among adolescents, says a research. Researchers looked at the trend of rising use of sexually explicit lyrics in music.

"Popular music can teach young men to be sexually aggressive and treat women as objects while often teaching young women that their value to society is to provide sexual pleasure for others," said the study by Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.

Todays music is promoting sexual aggression: Report

They analyzed the lyrics of 100 most popular songs from 1959 to 2009 prepared by Billboard magazine, the journal Sexuality & Culture reports. Researchers looked at the trend of rising use of sexually explicit lyrics in music.

"It is essential for society that sex education providers are aware of these issues and their impact on adolescent sexual behaviour," said Cougar Hall, who led the study.

The amount of music that eight to 18-year-olds listen to has increased by 45 percent in recent years, rising dramatically with the popularity of MP3 players, such as iPods, according to a Brigham statement.

The authors point out that not all sexual references are equal, and degrading and sexualised music can have a harmful effect on teens.

Girls can be led to judge their personal worth on a sexual level only, leading to poor body image, depression, eating disorders, and substance abuse.

The study was co-authored by Joshua H West and Shane Hill.

Bollywood gets funds from Gangsters and Politicians: WikiLeaks

A leaked US diplomatic cable has said that Bollywood welcomed funding from gangsters and politicians, known in India as "black money."

While there is no direct reference of Dawood Ibrahim which allegedly financed a number of movies, the cable said that in recent decades, the Bollywood film industry has been associated with the notorious Mumbai underworld, at the nexus of gangsters, money, and politics.

Bollywood gets funds from gangsters: WikiLeaks

According to Jehil Thakkar, Head of Media and Entertainment for (KPMG), this association stemmed from the financing needs of the industry; until 2000, by government fiat, the film industry was ineligible for bank credit, private equity, and other means of legitimate commercial financing.

"As a consequence, films were financed by ad hoc collections of investors, many of whom were from the construction and trade industries, who charged interest rates as high as 60-100 per cent."

"The industry also welcomed funds from gangsters and politicians, looking for ways to launder their ill-gotten gains, known in India as "black money", said the cable issued by the US Consulate in Mumbai, released by WikiLeaks.

After the government added the film industry to the list of legitimate industries, the corporatisation of Bollywood and the wider entertainment industry began," the cable said.

The WikiLeaks said the US officials also concluded that a standard movie from the Bollywood is unlikely to appeal to the Western audience.

"Although visibility for the Indian film industry has increased vis-a-vis movies like 'Slumdog Millionaire', the reality is the industry is just beginning to corporatise and understand the Western market," says the cable issued by the US Consulate in Mumbai.

"Though many players are attracted to the glamour of the industry, the standard Indian movie rarely makes a profit and is unlikely ever to appeal to Western audiences," said the cable dated February 1, 2010 and released by WikiLeaks on August 30.

"The film industry is well-aware of this trend, and seeks to find other avenues for entering the Western market and improve their own profitability within the South Asian diaspora," it said.

The US Government has neither confirmed nor denied the authenticity of these cables.

Majority of Indian Muslims live in a very poor conditions

The United States believes that there are many more Muslims who live in India than is being officially stated here through census, and 'Islam' here presents a series of dichotomies like most issues affecting the world's largest democracy.

The US views on 'Indian Islam' and its interpretation had found place in one of its diplomatic cable, leaked by WikiLeaks. Referring to various 'contacts' in India, the cable says that most of them believe that the official figure ( Census 2001) of over 138 million Muslims in India is "under representative" as actual number is "substantially higher" - closer to 160 to 180 million.

Majority of Indian Muslims live in a very poor conditions

Taking sympathetic views of Indian Muslims for their 'liberal' approach, the cable, originated from American embassy in New Delhi in February last year, says that majority of the Muslims live in a very poor condition despite some of the millionaires from the community, like Azim Premji, influence Indian market.

It says: "Iconic celebrities such as Bollywood actor Shahrukh Khan attract legions of fans, while millions of Muslims languish in poverty. Since Independence, three Muslims have been appointed as President, but Muslims are grossly under-represented in Parliament and other elected bodies".

The US embassy cable also refers to the Rajinder Sachar Committee report which in 2006 revealed that Muslims in general fare worse in economic terms than India's Dalits. "These seeming contradictions reflect overall socioeconomic trends in India: a tiny percentage of Muslims thrive, while the vast majority struggles to support themselves".

Apartment or Independent house, Which is better?

Apartment or independent house? It is an endless debate. There are valid arguments to buttress the claims on both sides. While the jury is still out, there is a growing demand from certain sections of the housing sector, which argue that builders must ensure that the apartments they build should be able to face the vagaries of time for at least seven-eight decades.

Your flat may not last more than 30-40 years

It is no secret that economic factors and a fast lifestyle have dealt a death knell for the culture of independent houses in India. As the cost of an independent house is staggering, not many buyers consider the option of going for one now. Land prices have rocketed and made the purchase of a site and construction of a house almost impossible . Cut back to the 80s, when the capital was still green: those were the days when the apartment culture had not yet gripped the capital. Today , the scene is completely different .

Not only are concrete blocks mushrooming all over the city, large individual houses are fast disappearing with residents opting to give them up to developers. A typical apartment complex or gated community comes with clubs, a large community garden with plenty of area for children to play and pathways to walk. With most of these apartments pitching plenty of light and ventilation as their USPs, individual units, though small, do not make a resident feel cramped.

Sanjeev Shrivasta, the chairman and managing director of Assotech , says, "The New Age customers are finding community living more attractive given the nature of facilities offered as well as the ease in tackling maintenance and security, which is the responsibility of the RWA." According to him, a typical homebuyer does not have the time or energy to spare to build a house.

Sanjay Khanna, director of Kailash Nath Khanna Projects Pvt Ltd, says: "Building an individual house involves not just designing, but finding the right contractor for the construction. And it doesn't end there, as sanctions and approvals for utility connections will still have to be tackled. An independent house also has issues of security and maintenance. These can prove a deterrent, especially when apartment complexes and villas with state-of-the-art facilities are available."

The fact that fresh land for individual houses is no more available within the capital again acts as a dampener. Getting the desired location is a further incentive for homebuyers to opt for gated communities or apartment complexes, Khanna adds.

After listening to all these arguments , you are left with no option but to go for a flat. But, will your flat last more than 50 years or more? Well, it is an important question . Azmal Zaheer Khan, an architect with Delhi-based Kothari Associates, is of the view that unlike independent houses, we are looking at apartments which are unlikely to remain in a perfect state for over 30 years, if they as they are not maintained with due care.

"As far as an independent house is concerned, it can be rebuilt to suit changing tastes and requirements, at any point of time," Khan says, adding that the house can be expanded horizontally if space permits , or vertically, by adding more floors. These are impossible in a unit in an apartment.

Sanjay Khanna says: "I meet many people who have sold their independent houses to move into flats and are now ruing their decision , as the quality of construction of their flats was bad, especially the plumbing and electricity."

Swiss Bank opening an ATM in Tihar Jail !!!

Switzerland’s top 2 banks UBS and Credit Suisse were requested by US President Barack Obama to open a branch in Tihar Jail, as a major pointer for United States Economic Revival. President Obama believes that most of the investment in US works because of the amazing backup provided by call centers, BPOs and KPOs in India. India has witnessed a lower amount of circulation of money, ever since the richest section of Indians have been put inside Tihar Jail. The Tihar Jail prisoners have their savings (Indian Publics savings) in Swiss Banks, who have been asked to open their branches in Tihar Jail. So, with a Swiss Bank branch/ATM in Tihar Jail, President Obama expects his economy to recover and continue with his presidency to run for yet another term.

Swiss Bank opening an ATM in Tihar jail

Meanwhile, many members of the Indian Government have welcomed this move, the other few have stood against it. It is expected that the ones supporting, are the ones who are extremely likely to end up in Tihar Jail. A consensus for now has been achieved in the parliament as both the sides agreed on an ATM to be installed instead of a Branch. On the other hand, the Swiss Banks, UBS and Credit Suisse, are extremely happy to get business yet again, from their top customers back.

Although it seems like a win-win situation, there are a couple of problems which will be faced because of this. With the amount of savings the Tihar Jail Prisoners have, refilling the ATM many times a day would be an issue. On the bright side, Prisoner Ajmal Kasab is extremely happy because of the ATM. Its been quite some time for Kasab, since he has been having his Biryani on a regular basis. With money in hand, its about time he switches to ordering food from outside. Dominos delivery might be a good option. Kasab won’t even mind paying Dominos even if they are any later than 30 minutes, with so much cash at bank.

Well, so, Obama revives his economy. Then what? Then, as the Tihar VIPs continue to use the ATM, money runs dry in Switzerland Banks. Then, Switzerland Recession to European Recession to USA Recession. I guess ‘Phas Gaya Re Obama‘.

August was a month of agony for investors as they lost more than Rs 1 crore in every second of trade, on an average, taking the total losses for the market to over Rs 5.5 lakh crore.

It was also the worst month for investors since January 2011, when the average loss per second of trade was about Rs 1.5 crore.

Investors lost Rs 1.13 cr every second in August, Total loss Rs 5.5 lakh cr

The benchmark index lost over 1,500 points in the entire month, while the investor wealth plummeted by Rs 5,55,650 crore - the biggest monthly loss since January 2011 when the market had lost little over Rs 7,00,000 crore.

There were 21 trading days during August, with each day having 23,400 seconds of trade. This puts the average loss for every second at Rs 1.13 crore for the month.

The losses would have been much higher, but for a sharp rebound in the last two days of trading, when the market rose by over 5 per cent with an over 800-point rise in the Sensex and about Rs 3 lakh crore gain in investor wealth.

The average loss for one day was about Rs 26,500 crore. This includes losses for all the investor classes - promoters as well as public shareholders of over 4,000 actively traded companies in the stock market.

This is based on decline in the value of all listed stocks, which fell to Rs 60,61,625 crore at the end of August.

Adding to the investors' agony, August proved to be the fourth consecutive month of monthly losses. The markets also recorded losses in July (Rs 1,13,673 crore), June (Rs 921 crore) and May (Rs 1,76,220 crore) - taking the total four-month loss to Rs 8,50,000 crore.
